Street Sweeping and litter picking

In an effort to reduce the waste flowing on the streets and public spaces, Clean City SA managed the day-to-day operations of an allocated 250 participants since December 2022, for a period of nine (9) months, thereafter 327 participants for a period of ten (10) months, and currently 300 participants for a period of ten (10) months in the inner-city of Johannesburg. This is a programme in partnership with the Johannesburg Inner City Social Employment Programme, which is funded through the Social Employment Fund.

Converting organic waste into compost

Area: Tembisa

It is common cause that the landfill sites are filling up in cities such as Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni. It is widely known and reported that organic food waste that piles up in landfill sites exacerbates the climate change crisis, in the emission of the greenhouse gas known a s methane. As a strategic implementation partner, Clean City SA in collaboration with the Council for Scientific a n d Industrial Research (CSIR) and Compostable Plastics Council (COPCO), have implemented a project to convert organic waste into compost within 24-hours through a rapid
composter machine in Tembisa. This project is implemented at the Tembisa Self Help Association of theDisabled (T-SHAD).

This project also includes street sweeping, litter picking, and sorting of waste for recycling in a sustainable manner, in public spaces. The indigenous trees are planted where the community or government employees will nurture and look after the trees for the foreseeable future.

Waste Minimisation Education

Area: Gauteng

From time to time, Clean City SA collaborates with primary schools by educating learners between the ages of 11 and 13 years old about waste minimization. The education consists of topics such as what is an ecosystem, what is waste, what are the sources of waste, how to separate waste at source, and recycling. Clean City SA encourages schools to get learners to collect recyclables from home and to bring them to the school for sorting. Clean City SA connects the schools with buy-back centres, which also works as a fundraising opportunity for the schools.

Corporate waste minimisation events

Area: Gauteng

Clean City SA has collaborated with several organisations in the private sector by hosting their employees to get involved in clean-ups and be educated on waste minimization. Depending on the needs of the organisation, Clean City SA works with the CSI teams to put together a bespoke corporate event, which always includes a clean-up activity in the community of their choice in Gauteng.
